{"id":2745,"date":"2026-09-20T16:09:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-20T14:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.molongui.com\/help\/?p=2745"},"modified":"2026-09-20T16:09:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-20T14:09:11","slug":"why-is-wordpress-showing-a-different-default-avatar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.molongui.com\/help\/why-is-wordpress-showing-a-different-default-avatar\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Is WordPress Showing a Different Default Avatar?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If the avatar shown on your site is different from the Custom Default Avatar configured in Molongui Authorship, WordPress may be using its own Default Avatar instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molongui Authorship and WordPress provide different fallback mechanisms, and which one is used depends on your avatar settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Molongui Custom Default Avatar vs. WordPress Default Avatar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are two different settings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Molongui Custom Default Avatar<\/strong> \u2014 Configured under <strong>Authors > Settings > General<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>WordPress Default Avatar<\/strong> \u2014 Configured under <strong>Settings > Discussion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Molongui Custom Default Avatar is a dedicated fallback image that you upload and choose yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WordPress Default Avatar is part of the normal WordPress\/Gravatar avatar flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the Molongui Custom Default Avatar used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If <strong>Use a custom default avatar<\/strong> is enabled, Molongui Authorship can use that image when no higher-priority author-specific avatar is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Local Avatars and Gravatar enabled, the usual priority is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Local Avatar \u2192 Gravatar \u2192 Custom Default Avatar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When is the WordPress Default Avatar used?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If Gravatar is enabled but the Molongui Custom Default Avatar is disabled, WordPress can use the Default Avatar configured under <strong>Settings &gt; Discussion<\/strong> when the author does not have a Gravatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Local Avatar \u2192 Gravatar \u2192 WordPress Default Avatar<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why am I seeing the WordPress Default Avatar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You will typically see the WordPress Default Avatar when all of the following are true:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The author has no higher-priority Local Avatar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gravatar is enabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The author does not have a Gravatar associated with their email address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Molongui Custom Default Avatar is disabled or not being used in that specific avatar flow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use the Molongui Custom Default Avatar instead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to <strong>Authors > Settings<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the <strong>General<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find the <strong>Author Avatar Settings<\/strong> section.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable <strong>Use a custom default avatar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the image you want to use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Save the settings.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Once enabled, the Molongui Custom Default Avatar can replace the WordPress Default Avatar in the normal Molongui avatar fallback flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why am I seeing a Mystery Person avatar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Mystery Person avatar usually comes from a Gravatar or legacy Author Box fallback configuration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does not necessarily mean that the Mystery Person option is selected as the Default Avatar in WordPress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Author Box can have its own historical avatar source and fallback settings, and existing configurations are preserved for backward compatibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if Gravatar is disabled?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If <strong>Use Gravatar for author avatars<\/strong> is disabled under <strong>Authors &gt; Settings &gt; General<\/strong>, Molongui Authorship does not use the WordPress Default Avatar as part of the Gravatar flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In that case, the plugin will use another enabled avatar source, such as a Local Avatar or the Molongui Custom Default Avatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Still seeing an unexpected avatar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Whether the author has a Local Avatar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether Gravatar is enabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the author has a Gravatar associated with their email address.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the Molongui Custom Default Avatar is enabled.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which Default Avatar is selected under <strong>Settings > Discussion<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether the Author Box or shortcode is using an explicit fallback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If the avatar shown on your site is different from the Custom Default Avatar configured in Molongui Authorship, WordPress may be using its own Default Avatar instead.
